About Long Ashton Orchestra

Long Ashton Orchestra (otherwise known as LAO)  is one of the leading amateur orchestras in the South West, drawing its members from the Bristol area and in particular, North Somerset and of course – Long Ashton.  We are directed by the Cardiff based music educator, Chris Holley.

We perform at least three concerts every year, in North Somerset venues, Long Ashton itself, and in Bristol. The leader of Long Ashton orchestra since 2025 is Alison John, who is not only an excellent violinist, but also a nurturing and encouraging guide to the whole orchestra.

The wide repertoire includes overtures, concertos for flute, violin and for cello, and the full range of symphonic music – from Brahms to Beethoven. Concerts are held in aid of charities, both local and global, supporting causes which often have personal links with members of the orchestra. Entrance to most concerts is free, with a retiring charity collection.

LAO prides itself on being inclusive of all players, while at the same time aiming high. Many of our players have been regular members for many years, and enjoy not only the music making, but also the social life of the orchestra. The orchestra is not auditioned, but has attracted some of the top players in the area, who contribute both by leading sections and by solo performance. The range is wide, both in terms of age and experience, and although the orchestra seeks players with Grade Four or above, it is inclusive and welcoming in its approach to new members and old.  We currently can boast that our players are aged from 13 to 80.
